{"id":178,"date":"2006-07-18T16:00:56","date_gmt":"2006-07-18T16:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/miguelpdl.com\/weblog\/?p=178"},"modified":"2006-07-18T16:00:56","modified_gmt":"2006-07-18T16:00:56","slug":"the-impact-of-metcalfes-law-and-other-laws-on-communication-networks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/miguelpdl.com\/weblog\/the-impact-of-metcalfes-law-and-other-laws-on-communication-networks\/","title":{"rendered":"The impact of Metcalfe&#8217;s Law and other laws on communication networks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"IEEE Spectrum: Metcalfe's Law is Wrong\" href=\"http:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/jul06\/4109\">IEEE Spectrum: Metcalfe&#8217;s Law is Wrong<\/a><br \/>\nI&#8217;ve read with interest this article recently published in the <a href=\"http:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/jul06\/4109\">July 2006 IEEE Spectrum<\/a> magazine, which refutes <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metcalfe's_law\">Metcalfe&#8217;s Law<\/a> that states that the value of a communications network is proportional to the square of the number of users on the system, and proposes an alternative which states that the value of a communications network of size n grows in proportion to n log(n). They do highlight that this is a growth law, which means it cannot predict the value of a network from its size alone, but has to know the valuation of a network at one particular size. It can then estimate its value at any future size.<br \/>\nWhy is it interesting.
